ABOUT THE LEAGUE
Founded in 2011, the Oconee Junior Golf League (OJGL) operates each Spring, Summer, and Fall. The league is open to players in Elementary and Middle School which includes an Elementary School division, Middle School team division, and Middle School open division. Emphasizing team match play and competition, the League is great way for young players to make new friends and have fun while developing their golf game! All skill levels are encouraged to participate.
The League is structured in a team format, whereby groups of 4-5 players (boys’ and girls’ teams) are matched by age to form the team. Skill levels are purposely mixed to allow for even league-wide competition, and also to provide stronger players the ability to ‘anchor’ his or her individual team – similar to an A-B-C-D player structure. Each team is named after a popular professional golfer, and each team has an adult Coach that guides the group during the matches, as well as any practices that are set up. Teams receive instruction from a local teaching pro in a group-clinic structure, providing hands-on guidance on the basic fundamentals of the game.
Matches are conducted on a matching-scorecard basis, occurring once per week for 8 weeks. Juniors play from his/her age appropriate yardages. Individual scoring is a Scramble format, and final scores are simply compared based on the assigned opponent for the week. Each team practices and plays its matches at a set day and time each week regardless of that week’s opponent; scorecard-comparison is made after all week’s matches are completed to determine the head-to-head match for the week. The team with the best record in each age/gender group at the end of the season are determined to be the winning team for the season and receive prizes/trophies.
In partnership with the Athens Area Junior Golf Tour, the Oconee Junior Golf League serves as an excellent starting point for young junior golfers to learn and develop their game. Most League players also decide to join the AAJGT to compete on an individual level. Together, the Oconee Junior Golf League and the AAJGT have become one of the top junior golf development programs in Northeast Georgia.
